Philosophy:
The Education Department at Michael Sobell House in conjunction
with Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and Network is committed to providing
a varied, evidenced based multi professional palliative care educational
programme. Our aim is to improve the understanding and delivery
of specialist and general palliative care through the development
of relevant and accessible training -short workshops, study days
and university linked courses. We focus not only on the physical,
psychological, emotional, spiritual and social aspects of palliative
care in relation to men and women with a life threatening illness,
their carers and the health carer themselves, but also the challenges
of palliative care service provision and delivery in the 21st century
(e.g. NHS Cancer Plan, Long Term Conditions, NICE Guidance, Knowledge
and Skills Framework etc)
Quality is vital to teaching and in this respect our education
philosophy is characterised by a number of key beliefs.
We believe in building the Confidence (belief in self), Competence
(application of skills & knowledge) and Comfort (ability to
pass on knowledge & skills) of our participants by:
1. Investing in our participants to challenge, motivate, develop,
empower and support them as adult learners in their personal and
professional development.
2. Seeing education as an interactive, dynamic life long learning
process.
3. Promoting a culture of evidenced based care and research awareness
4. Providing a supportive environment, sensitive to group or individual
needs.
5. Providing accessible and appropriate sessions to the multi professional
team within primary and secondary care within the resources available
