The Home Visiting Service offers a visiting service enabling cancer
patients, their friends and families to be supported by a volunteer
within their own home.
Home Visiting volunteers are suitably trained volunteers who offer
emotional and practical support to a person with advanced cancer,
usually in his or her own home. They help in whatever way is appropriate
in the circumstances. Generally they will visit on a pre-arranged
regular basis to provide support and companionship, as well as some
help with light practical tasks. Perhaps they would be able to give
the usual carer a break or help with collecting a prescription,
writing a letter or paying a bill.
The volunteers come from a variety of personal and professional
backgrounds. All prospective volunteers are interviewed prior to
be accepted onto our training course, which will equip them to carry
out these visits. The volunteers have been recruited, trained and
are supported by Michael Sobell House, the Palliative Care Unit
at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, Middlesex.
How do I get a volunteer?
Please speak to your key worker, usually your District or Macmillan
nurse. They will be able to contact Michael Sobell House to make
a referral on your behalf.
