Michael Sobell House has been providing specialist palliative care
since opening in 1977.
The unit has a philosophy that is compatible with hospice care.
A multi-professional team of doctors, nurses, chaplains, social
workers, counsellors, physiotherapists,
occupational therapists, complementary therapists, art therapists,
housekeepers and admin staff support the unit.
The unit has a focus of improving quality of life for patients
by providing relief from distressing symptoms. Patients may be admitted
for symptom management, respite or for care in the last days of
their life.
During your stay you will be under the care of our consultant who
is a specialist in palliative medicine and you will also been seen
by the specialist registrars who are responsible for your day-to-day
medical care.
You will be assessed by a qualified nurse on admission, who, together
with other nursing staff, will be responsible for your nursing care.
They will plan your care with you, your family and friends. At
all times links will be maintained with
your community nursing team, your GP and hospital specialist.
The 16-bed in-patient unit has a team of dedicated staff, who acknowledge
the uniqueness of individuals, respect their autonomy and support
any decisions they make.
During a stay in Michael Sobell House we will provide support at
a time, which can often be traumatic.
The team will be aware of your physical, psychological, social,
emotional and spiritual needs.
Patients are encouraged to express their wishes and be actively
involved in decisions concerning their care.
For those returning home, the staff will assess the need for extra
help or equipment and arrange for it to be made available when they
go home.
