Very special importance is attached to the psychological and social
needs of patients, their families and carers who are invariably
quite traumatised by the experience of life threatening disease.
Sometimes this stress can be very emotionally disabling and may
produce distressing physical symptoms (e.g. nausea). For carers
this often continues into bereavement. Social, financial and practical
problems can further compound the difficulties that patients and
families face at such a critical time.
Supporting patients, their children and carers psychologically
and socially is the role of the Social Work team. It comprises a
Team Manager, two Palliative Care Counsellors and twelve Bereavement
counsellors.
The Social Work Department also trains and supervises social work
and counselling students, runs training courses, teaches and undertakes
research. It has also run some national help-lines.
Additionally, a pre and post HIV test counselling service, on going
counselling and palliative care for people who are HIV+ or who have
AIDS is available.
